Early subway systems were hatched as a solution to the problem that sprang up when rapidly growing cities in the wake of the Industrial Revolution found themselves unable to expand where they needed it most — in their centers. Streets built wide enough for modest horse and carriage traffic were now jammed to a standstill by horse-drawn public buses and private carts, trolleys and streetcars, delivery carts, pedestrians, and eventually automobiles. So, tunnels were dug beneath the streets — and subways were born. Swipe your ticket in these 10 cities with the oldest metro systems around the world.
